NBA Stylist Rachel Johnson and Footaction come together to create a new look
It seems not to long ago the NBA players all looked like Allen Iverson, baggy clothes, gaudy jewelry, braids and sneakers. But once the NBA banned the street fashion, players had to learn to adapt to the new rules and find their way through personal styled. In comes Rachel Johnson, the 1st to step in and tell the players "don't worry I got you", and that exactly what she did. Now you can see guys like Lebron, Ama're, Chris Bosh, Victor Cruz etc. I made a concerted effort to infiltrate the market way before the Commissioner issued the new rules. I had work with all the major music guys like Jayz and Pharrell and I wanted to start to style athletes. A friend of mine from Def Jam introduced me to Jalen Rose, his closet was full of clothes that were bad for him and I saw that these guys needed someone to educate them on style, guys were so used to going to the grandfathers tailor.
Why are you here working with Footaction? Footaction called me because they admired the look that was involving in the NBA,ugg australia for sale. They wanted to see what was my interpretation of their products.
How much longer you see yourself in this business? I don't know if I have end goal but what I would like to do is to continue to stay in this space. I want to talk more about styling and educating rather than actually style. I have a degree in education and I love educating people on style.
How difficult is it styling these super tall athletes? It's a huge challenge I do a lot of planning a lot of relationships and I deal in a lot of custom Styles.
Ok here are some rapidfire questions, ready?
Who's the bestdressed athlete? Lebron James
Who's the worst? No comment (smh, lol)
Who needs work with their style? Kobe Bryant
What was your worst styling effort? Lebron James, I hated his MVP look last year.
Who was the hardest to work with? Ama're Stoudemire, Why? Because his waist is so small but the rest of his body is huge.
What do you think of Russell Westbrook's look? I love it. Russell is utilizing fashion to brand himself and that's the whole point. After Michael Jordan left guys stop becoming brands. They stopped paying attention to their look. After MJ left it was the Allen Iverson phase he was the look of the league. How you look will translate into dollars for you, love or hate Russell's look people are talking about it. When I style, I'm developing brands here I know that when I style my clients I got to make sure that they're at the hottest events and fashion week as well. It's not enough to want a pair of Gucci or Louis Vuitton sneakers because if you have those sneakers where are you? Who's going to see it? You have to be seen everywhere.
Who's your newest client? Victor Cruz. I've had Victor for over a year and he has made a huge transformation because Victor is a huge sneaker head, I call him the Hollywood sneaker head, because he has the Calvin Klein Collection look but he also has an edge.
Any sport that doesn't need you? Soccer, those guys dress well.
Do you have competition in the athlete styling business? Everywhere I turn now there is someone styling an athlete. Every time I look on twitter now there's someone styling an athlete. But I'm the first one, and my roster and my work speaks to my influence.
